Zoom Unit: Christian SRE: Principles and Practice

Join Dr Jenn Phillips for a unit on how to engage the hearts of children and young people in “Christian Special Education: Principles and Practice” (Unit DE050). This online unit is being offered as a series of regular zoom sessions over 13 weeks in semester 2, beginning on Thursday July 31, 2025, from 5:30-7:00pm (AEST) with breaks coordinated for NSW school holidays.

The unit DE050 is fully accredited by the Australian University of Theology and is offered at undergraduate (AQF5&6).

The class size is limited to 20 students on a “first come, first served” basis, and preference will given to those enrolling for accredited study.

Students can participate in the unit in 2 ways:

  1. Accredited Study:

    • AQF level 5 or 6 (Diploma, Adv. Diploma, Associate Degree) = AUD$2600

  2. Audit student:

    • Full participation with assessments = AUD$1200

SOME INFORMATION ABOUT THE COURSE:

The material presented in this unit can be thought of as next-level teaching skills that build on the foundation of the mandatory SRE Accreditation provided by any SRE Provider. Jenn will be taking from current best-practice and research-based teaching methodologies used in schools across Australia (and beyond), applying them to the SRE teaching context (with its unique challenges).

WHO WOULD BENEFIT FROM STUDYING THIS UNIT:

This unit is suited for:

  • All SRE teachers who are keen to grow in their SRE teaching practice.

  • Any SRE Coordinators who would like to up-skill so that they can best support their teams in their SRE teaching practice.

  • Any paid SRE teachers who want to up-skill or invest in PD (while completing their mandatory theological training component of their authorisation.

IS THE FOCUS ON PRIMARY or SECONDARY SRE?

The content will focus on best-practice teaching methodologies. Students will be encouraged through worked examples to apply those methodologies to their teaching contexts – either primary or secondary.

ABOUT THE PRESENTER – Dr Jenn Philips

Dr. Jenn Phillips taught her first SRE class over 21 years ago. Since then, her main ministry focus has been SRE in various roles. Jenn has been a local Primary SRE coordinator, a paid High School SRE teacher, an advisor to SRE teachers and boards with Generate.

From 2018-2022, Jenn was the head of High School SRE for the Sydney Anglican Diocese. Since 2018, Jenn has been the director of the Think Faith SRE curriculum as well as the chair of the interdenominational cross-authorisation committee for SRE Curricula. Jenn is currently a Development Officer for Christian SRE, working to support SRE providers in Primary and High Schools across NSW.

Jenn has a PhD in English Literatures, an MA in teaching, an MA in English Literatures and is currently completing an MA in Theological studies. Before pursuing vocational ministry, Jenn was a university lecturer in English Literatures and Cultural analysis at Wollongong University and Wuhan University, China.
