OT205 – Genesis, Deuteronomy, Samuel

OT205 is a elective unit in the Diploma awards taught by the Timothy Partnership.

Commitments

OT205 is an academic unit taught online throughout the semester. It requires 7 hours of study per week, which includes:

  • Listening to the specially developed audio material

  • Reading the course notes and set readings

  • Interacting with online tutors and fellow students through the online forums

  • Reflecting on what you have learned

  • Completing written assessment tasks

  • Studying and preparing for the exam

Learning Outcomes

On completion of the unit, students will:

A. Know and understand:

1. The contents and structure of two of Genesis, Deuteronomy, 1 Samuel and 2 Samuel

2. The themes and theological teaching of the selected books

3. The nature and basic methods of Old Testament exegesis

B. In order to be able to ascertain the meaning of the text of the selected books, be able to:

1. Use sources such as biblical and theological dictionaries, commentaries and on-line resources

2. Recognise literary form and structure

3. Identify matters relating to authorship, date and purpose

4. Describe the historical, religious and socio-cultural background

5. Relate the text to the literary and canonical contexts

6. Comment on the meaning of significant words and phrases

7. Outline the contents and theology

8. Exegete the English text of a selection of passages from the selected books

C. And be in a position to:

1. Exegete the English text of the selected books for personal understanding and for use in ministry contexts Content Prescribed Texts:

1. Genesis 1–4, 6, 8–9, 11

2. Deuteronomy 5–8, 12, 16–18

3. 1 Samuel 1–4, 7–12

4. 2 Samuel 1–2, 5–7, 15–18, 24

Candidates will complete two of 1, 2, 3, 4.
