Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit, students will:

A. Know and understand: 1. The English text and structure of the New Testament 2. The leading theological themes of the New Testament

B. In order to be able to ascertain the meaning of the New Testament writings, be able to: 1. Use sources such as biblical and theological dictionaries, commentaries and on-line resources 2. Describe the historical, religious and socio-cultural background 3. Outline the contents and distinctive features of selected books 4. Trace the leading theological themes

C. And be in a position to: 1. Apply the leading themes of the New Testament in personal life and for use in ministry contexts 200 Level Units 119 Content

Section A: The Gospels – An Introduction to the NT and the Ministry of Jesus

2. The Gospel of John 3. The synoptic Gospels • Matthew • Mark • Luke

Section B: Acts to Revelation – The Birth of Christianity & The Epistles

4. The continuing work of Jesus through the Acts of the Apostles (including/continuing on from the Gospel of Luke)

5. Introduction to the NT letters – context, background, hermeneutics and ethics

6. The Paul’s Letters with particular reference to the Letter to the Roman Church

7. Hebrews and the Catholic Letter

8. Revelation
